Oil on Canvas
57 x 102 cm (22 x 40 inches)
Painted in 1949, this portrait of the American actress Yolande Donlan in her role as Lucrecia (The Blonde Minx) in the stage play “Cage Me a Peacock“ at The Strand Theatre in London was the star of the Royal Academy’s 1950 Summer Exhibition where it was purchased by the sitter for £450. It occupied pride of place in her home until she died in 2014. It took eleven sittings for Russell–Flint to complete this picture. Yolande Donlan used to complain that "This is the first time I have worked for someone and then had to pay for the privilege of doing so”. Yolande Donlan appeared on both stage and screen and starred with such other stars as Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Dirk Bogarde, Cliff Richard and many others. This portrait captures the glamour of the fifties when the austerity of the war years was finally put aside.
